The Faces and Stories of Hope and Resurrection Secondary School Students

“In our life we need to become girls of the future. I need to finish my education and then I get marriage. I am not marriage
before I finish my education.”
Prescilla, age 14

“At the year of 1998, my parents put me in the school to learn and become an educated person. First, I thank God, then my parents who feed me and send me to school, then Hope and Resurrection School where I learn and change my life from bad to good.”
John, age 19

“I have a beautiful wife and a lovely daughter. I am a faithful Christian who believe since 1989. I have no enough resources that I should use for secondary school fees, so I decided to work to raise my school fees. I help other families farm their land. When I finish my secondary school, I will be a minister for agriculture and help the community know how to depend on him/her self (self reliance).”
Isaac, age 30

“I always advise my community that they should put their effort on education, because then they will be good citizens who will head the Sudan well, without discrimination, no nepotism, decentralized ruling and others that affect unity in relation to peace.”
Abraham, age 19
Hope and Resurrection Secondary School is making a difference!
In July, 2007, coming in under construction schedule and budget, Hope and Resurrection Secondary School’s ten classroom, two-building structure was completed in the village of Atiaba, South Sudan. This is only the second secondary school in the region. The school opened in May 2008 with 64 ninth grade students. Southern Sudan’s academic year runs from April and until late November with a three week break in August. Each new school year at Hope and Resurrection, a class will be added until all grades are represented with approximately 240 students. The school's permanent structure allows classes to continue through the rainy season. Textbooks are provided for each student and qualified, trained teachers empower the students to become leaders in their communities.
In a region with an estimated 1.5 million school aged children, Hope and Resurrection Secondary School is one of only 22 high schools (grades 9-12) in Southern Sudan. Our students range in age from 15 to 41 years and are gratefully continuing or resuming their education following the civil war. Because of their incredible hunger for education, the majority walk or ride bikes two to three hours to school. These youth look to education as the tool to move themselves from poverty to self-sufficiency.
Our students are well-equipped to learn and perform because we provide a hot lunch of porridge or rice and beans. This is likely their only meal for the day. With a hot meal, textbooks, a permanent structure and trained teachers, our students are provided a safe and focused learning environment. We need your support to continue to provide an exceptional and unique education for the youth of this region.
Hope and Resurrection Secondary School fulfills three of the
Millennium Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2000:
- Universal Education
- Gender Equality
- End Poverty and Hunger
